The Europa Conference League is the third club competition in Europe in order of importance behind the Champions League and the Europa League. The teams that compete in it are determined based on the result of the national leagues and cups of the continent. The winner gets a direct ticket to the group stage of the next edition of the Europa League .

The first rumors that UEFA is considering incorporating in a third competition arose in 2015, considering that it could give the opportunity to the teams of the leagues with the lowest UEFA coefficient of go further than if they play the other two existing tournaments. With some exceptions, the matches are scheduled for Thursdays in two time periods: 18:55 CET and 21:00 CET. This means that they share a day and time with those of the Europa League.
