The Argentina Cup is the most important elimination tournament in the country. It was founded in 1969 and was attended by all the clubs of the Primera División Argentina that they were not qualified for the Copa Libertadores . In 1970, the championship was held again, but the final between San Lorenzo and Vélez was never completed. Its third edition was not held until more than 40 years later.

During the month of August 2010, the first rumors about the return of the competition began to emerge. On May 18, 2011, the AFA announced the project to celebrate it again. The great incentive for the teams was to have another method to access the Copa Sudamericana. A total of 186 clubs competed and it lasted almost a year. Boca Juniors became champion after beating Racing in the final played at the San Juan del Bicentenario Stadium.

Both the format and the number of entries have changed throughout the history of the Argentine Cup . The heats are decided in a single match and, if equality continues after 90 minutes, the qualifier for the next round is defined in a penalty shoot-out. Before the final phase, in which currently 64 teams participate, regional preliminary rounds are played between lower-category clubs. The matches are played on a neutral field from among those chosen by the organization. This measure seeks to take advantage of the different stadiums built in the country, especially those in the interior.

Due to the few editions held in its history, only a very select group of clubs have registered their name in the list of champions. Boca Juniors and River Plate are the only ones who know what it is to win more than two trophies from this tournament.

The Copa Argentina 2019-20 suffered very serious delays due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It started on January 15, 2020 with the qualifiers for each region. On March 17, the AFA decreed its temporary suspension to prevent the spread of the virus. After a break of more than six months, the ball rolled again on December 23, 2020. The final is scheduled to take place in November 2021. The champion was to qualify for the Copa Libertadores , but this competition was not going to end before its start. The organizers awarded the place to the best team in the Super League that had not yet entered the continental event.
