The Eredivisie is the first category of professional football in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1956 due to the growth of the sport in the country and the intention to professionalize it. Ajax managed to be the champions of the inaugural season in a tournament without play-offs for the title.

It is made up of 18 participants. Each one faces the rest of the rivals twice, once playing in their stadium and the other as a visitor. At the end of 34 days, the order of the classification defines the future of the clubs. On April 24, the KNVB definitively announced the suspension of the season and made the following decisions: the title was void, there were no promotions or demotions, and the classification for European competitions was defined according to the positions in the table of the March 8, date of the last completed day.
